Culverts

      It is interesting that something like this exists, a vast network of stone corridors beneath the city.  Given that it was almost destroyed by floods; it was good that they built this when they did.  These stone tunnels were 15 feet in diameter with large walkways on both sides and water flowed in the middle channel.  The strongest fixture points were at intersections where large metal rings bound at the center at the top of each atrium, where the weight only served to make the whole composition stronger.  These channels ran all throughout the city and some people used them to get from one side of town to another.  This wasn’t a big city so there wasn’t many who did.  

      I wandered this well maintained labyrinth in search of something lost, and found an open access way to the outside with concentric concrete circles set evenly apart in the widening stream of water flowing from the tunnel.  Some short ways away there was a building in the midst of this artificial landscape, alone and resolute.  I stepped into the building, which wasn’t locked and saw that there were quite a number of physical models of the city.  One was scaled down versions of the tunnel system.  Gifted minds were once in this place, that much I was certain of.
